about

You’ve got to know where you’re from to know where you’re going.

---

It would be great if the retromania that’s been going on since now many years though reissues and compilations of obscure rarities could explain itself in the light of the idea that You’ve got to know where you’re from to know where you’re going.

If this is true for music scholars, still it’s difficult not to feel drowned in the unreadable and alienating stream of informations that’s become our lives. In a world in constant acceleration, the past feels comfortable as it’s been assimilated and it can be tempting to rewrite history for the better.

If there’s one subversion though in this retromania, it is to remind that time does not move forward: it just switches place. Gold diggers thus now dig always deeper in regional scenes that are - obviously - more than just folklore and traditions. If cultural appropriation isn’t far, we do still appreciate how other languages and dialects are put in perspective in a globalised world.

Except that while looking in the past, we would almost miss an exciting yet underground present that is just hiding in a cave nearby. In the heart of the old world, since 2015, Cheptel Records is collecting and assembling music of a certain contemporary scene of Western Switzerland and - in advance - rewrites history for retromaniacs of a yet non-existing future.

This musical selection is an attempt to answer a need not yet formulated. An attempt to transform a whisper into a future evidence. A turnkey treasure map for diggers, DJs and collectors of the future that in their turn will also be able to rewrite history thinking that things were better back then.
