Outsiders raconte en français le combat quotidien, le travail, le chômage, c’est selon. Pas de chansons d’amour ici : tapis de guitares urbain et batteries industrielles rappellent la mécanique implacable d’une société post-moderne. Pas question non plus de céder à la nostalgie : Adieu Gary Cooper impose son propos contemporain à coup de synthétiseurs et de boîtes à rythmes, conviant l’auditeur à une fête désespérée d’où émerge une lueur d’espoir sous les traits limpides d’une pop discrètement sophistiquée.

Depuis « Bleu Bizarre » (Moi J’Connais Records, 2014 - moijconnais.bandcamp.com/album/mjcr026-bleu-bizarre-2) et ses ballades garage-folk lancinantes, le groupe a tourné jusqu’en Chine d’où il a rapporté un disque live dur comme ce pays-continent  (« Souvenirs de Chine », Cheptel Records, 2016 - cheptelrecords.bandcamp.com/album/chptl-010-souvenirs-de-chine). Une occasion déjà d’expérimenter de nouvelles formes au fil des influences, entre le punk minimal et électronique du duo new-yorkais Suicide et le « Nebraska » d’un Bruce Springsteen réhabilité en songwriter des rêves déchus et autres mauvais coups du sort. Avec une nouvelle maturité, Adieu Gary Cooper parvient à saisir d’une phrase, à l’instar de Springsteen, le malaise existentiel diffus: « Tout autour de moi tourne un peu trop vite, j’ai un mal de fou à suivre le rythme », « Et moi le cul posé sur une chaise dix putains d’heures par jour, comment veux-tu que je croie encore en l’amour? ».

Chansons pour les lundis matin, pour les transports en commun. Bande-son d’un temps présent gris face à l’avenir qui se dérobe. Surtout pas d’excès de soleil pour réussir un tel disque, pas d’exotisme ni de sirènes bienveillantes. L’album a été enregistré à Genève par Thierry Van Osselt (Knut, Mama Rosin) au 3e sous-sol d’un parking de banlieue, mixé par Yvan Bing (Moriarty) et masterisé par Lad Agabekov (Nostromo). La pochette, réalisée par le bédéiste Aseyn (Les Autres Gens, Comment je me suis fait plaquer, Nungesser) résume cette lutte dont on finit par se demander si l’un des combattants sortira vainqueur.
